Creating games to help your pre-schooler learn the letters of the alphabet is simple. All you need is a little imagination and you can provide your pre-schooler with the code to unlock the door to the magical world of reading.
As soon as you feel he is ready, begin to sing the alphabet song to your pre-schooler. Children are past masters at learning songs, whether from the radio, television or from people around them so they will pick up the words of the alphabet song easily. There is no need to teach them word for word.
An alphabet frieze is great for seeing and saying the alphabet. Stick one on a wall where your child can see it comfortably. You can even make one yourself with a long strip of wall lining paper. Ask your pre-schooler to join in. You can casually name the letters but do not try to teach them to him. He will pick up the names of one or two and that is enough to begin with. When you have the frieze ready you can point to each letter as you sing the song.
Play letter games. You can play ‘Where is the letter?’ Draw and cut out a letter the same size as the same letter printed on the frieze. Ask your pre-schooler to help decorate it. When your child is not looking, place it somewhere, partially hidden but where it can be seen and ask your child “Where is the A?” for example. Make a great play of looking everywhere for it. When your pre-schooler finds it, celebrate, make some noise, dance around. Help your pre-schooler experience the excitement of success.
Be creative with this game. Use the same letter several times throughout the day. Perhaps you can put the A to ’sleep’ on a cushion at naptime or place it on the table at mealtime, anything to familiarise your child with its shape and sound. At the end of the day, pin it to the frieze, over the letter A that is printed there. Throughout this game be sure to let your pre-schooler hear you say the sound of each of the letters.
Do this with all the letters of the alphabet over several days. Through play, over time, your child will become familiar with the shapes and sounds of the letters of the alphabet.
Try finding the letter by its sound. When you have completed all the letters of the alphabet, you can play another game where you ask your child to find the letter by its sound. For instance, you can ask “Where is the letter that says ‘buh’?” Hopefully your pre-schooler will find and hand you the letter B. You can stand the letter next to the butter dish or a ball or a bag while saying the name of the object. Your child will eventually make the association between the sound of the letter and the first sound of the name of the object.
Point out letters of the alphabet as you go about your daily routine and say the sounds. As your pre-schooler becomes more confident with letters, ask him to find and name the letters himself.
I Spy is a great game for practising the sounds of the letters of the alphabet. In this game you say, “I spy with my little eye something beginning with (say the sound of a letter)”. Your pre-schooler can then look around for an item beginning with that letter sound.
Buy a book about the alphabet. Choose one with colourful, fun pictures and large, clearly depicted letters of the alphabet. Say the sounds and encourage your pre-schooler to copy you. Take care not to pressure your child. Make these sessions playful and fun. Children learn most easily through play and through entertaining games they can learn the letters of the alphabet quickly and happily.
